Music has always been part of human expression and culture. Among the many people who enjoy and produce music, some are able to make their living doing so. Where music touches commerce, we have “the business of music.”
The music industry employs thousands of people and serves many more “customers” who enjoy music as part of their lives. In this report we review the buisness of music and highlight the economic contributions it makes in metropolitan Detroit.
The purposes of this report are to:
- Define and describe the “music industry” in the Detroit area.
- Quantify the size of the industry to the extent possible, including employment, worker earnings, company sales, number of establishments, and number of events.
- Discuss what sets Detroit apart from other cities in the business of music.
